A candlelit, cozy bubble bath with coffee and a book on a tray

Epsom salt is a fantastic addition to your self care routine and it is actually just a form of magnesium called magnesium sulfate. Not to be confused with other forms of magnesium supplements (e.g., oral supplements like Calm or the laxative Milk of Magnesia), epsom salt dissolves very well in water and is used as a bath salt. It can be found at most drug stores in the cosmetic section and is usually infused with different scents for a lovely aroma, or you can buy it unscented.

The benefits of epsom salt mimic the benefits of magnesium supplements in general. It is worth noting that because epsom salt is not absorbed into the body, its reported health benefits have not been proven in studies and are suspected to be related in part to the effects of a warm bath itself. Nonetheless, epsom salt has been said to improve:

  1. Stress

  2. Sleep

  3. Constipation

  4. Exercise performance and recovery

  5. Muscle aches and stiffness

  6. Pain and swelling

A couple additional benefits of epsom salt:

  1. It is very affordable and easy to get.

  2. Studies show it is not absorbed into your body through the skin, so it is quite safe.

I’ve made epsom salt foot soaks for my husband (who is not one to usually prioritize his foot care), and he now requests them on the regular, especially after a long day on his feet. Epsom salt is a must-have in our bathroom closet.
